Rare Review #1: The Music of William Shatner

I’ll just come right out and say it: I’ve never been a Star Trek fan. Sure, I watched The Next Generation every day after school when I was a kid. Riker was my favorite because he could play the trombone. How smart I was.

A couple of weeks ago, a friend sent me a copy of a song by William Shatner. His comment: Mmm… I feel content. For five minutes and thirty-nine seconds. I started to listen. IM windows cried for my attention but I was in another universe. When the song finished, I walked compulsively down the stairs and out the door and laid down in the grass to soak in the sun and the air. It was complete musical overwhelm. It was called Together.

Today I went to Sam Goody and bought the new William Shatner album, Has Been. I was pleased to learn that it was arranged and produced by Ben Folds, a favorite artist of mine. Once I had it in my iTunes, I let fly the geeky musical goodness of the ex-Captain Kirk. And it is goodness! The beats and arrangements are professional and plenty groovy but what really attracts me to this record is the wizened sense of humor that comes out in the lyrics. Go get it!

  1. Got it. Love it. I think the best thing I can say about it is that I’m still listening to it. – it’s Ben folds, it’s Kirk… People doubted mixing chocolate and peanut butter at one time, but look how that turned out.
